This year at school we are learning all about different career paths. We’re still too young to choose which one we want to go into for real, but our teachers think it’s a good idea to find out more about the kinds of things we can do. That way, we know which subjects to take when we get into high school and potentially also have a better understanding of our own interests and passions.
Recently we have had talks with some people who are on many different career paths. My favourite so far was a man who works at a reputable podiatry clinic operating in Melbourne. He came in to talk to us about feet. He was a good speaker and was also really funny. He brought in a huge model of a foot, probably about as big as my whole leg, and sat it down in front of the whole class. The foot was colour coded, with different colours corresponding to different muscles. I thought this was really fun, because I only ever see feet from the outside and it’s interesting to learn what makes them move.
The podiatrist also taught us about the most common foot conditions. My favourite was learning about how to cure achilles tendinitis fast, since I know who Achilles is from reading books. I’m not sure if Achilles actually had sore ankles and that was why they named the foot condition after him, but it’s still really interesting either way. The podiatrist finished his speech by giving us all fancy business cards for his business, and letting us all know that taking care of your feet is very important, especially if you are young and you play a lot of sport. I do play a lot of sport and I play a lot of different sports, like basketball and swimming. Sometimes my feet hurt after swimming because I have been kicking my feet, so I think I might need to see a podiatrist.
